How to Make It An Effective Madison Yard Sale Trip
A couple of pointers to keep in mind as you head out:
- Make sure you get an early start. The early birds get the goodies first.
- Carry cash and plenty of small bills. Change can be hard to come by.
- Plan your route ahead of time. If you’re hitting multiple sales on the same day, plot your course. You don’t want to spend time driving all over the place.
- Haggle like crazy. You can always get a better price.
- If it doesn’t work and you’re not a handyperson – pass. You’ll just be buying junk for your own future rummage sale.
- Be creative. Think of new ways to use items, such as these ideas we found on Pinterest:
Old suitcases are all the rage – especially when transformed into a table.
Make an animal sculpture out of old furniture.
Love biking and bathrooms? Why not combine the two?
Yet another brilliant use of bright orange duct tape.
Sometimes a drawer (and legs) is all you need.
The multi-purpose old suitcase, this time for Fido.
What happens to an old, cruddy desk when you add cool paint color, funky trim, and stylish knobs.
We’ve got a couple photos of these unique pieces. A mash-up of old, discarded furniture suddenly becomes an amazing new piece.
Here’s another one, with different funky colors for added style.
And you thought those old, unusable CDs were junk?
Amazing what plants will do to an old dressers, shoes and teapot.
Old posters and maps can make for some great art.
Another mash-up. Dig the purple.
An old window goes horizontal and becomes a resourceful magazine bin/coffee table.
Who says china cabinets can’t store shoes?
If you love to water-ski, this chair is for you.
Our friend the suitcase returns. The latest incarnation – a medicine cabinet!
Is it a wooden pallet – or a shoe rack?
For all you gardeners, check out these pot holders.
Rummage sales are a cost-effective way to enhance your digs. They’ll help you save cash, and perhaps allow you to spend a little more on your next rental! Check out our rent-budgeting worksheet to see how much you can truly afford!
