What started with one rental house in Madison’s Vilas neighborhood in 1980 has grown into one of the Madison area’s most respected companies with nearly 80 employees. The service excellence that Steve Brown established then still shapes our organization today.

Steve Brown Apartments is one of the largest owner-managed providers of student and multi-family rental housing in the Madison, Wisconsin area.

Our Portfolio

Downtown & Student Housing: Campus rentals for college students and recent graduates is where Steve Brown Apartments began, and it’s where the heart of our company remains. We understand what today’s generations want and need, and have responded by providing a variety of living experiences that range from budget conscious to luxury, and from studio to eight-bedroom house.

Many of our downtown and student apartment communities include furnishings, free Internet and heat, computer labs, on-site offices, parking, and resident appreciation events. All of our properties include garbage service, snow removal, and 24-hour emergency maintenance.

Multi-Family Housing: Our property portfolio includes housing options for everyone, not just students. We provide multi-family housing at many unique properties on the west side of Madison, and in Oregon, Stoughton, Verona, Mount Horeb, Waunakee, and Waterloo. Our multi-family housing products range from affordable, basic apartments to luxury, executive properties with all of the extras. We have also developed a line of Steve & Laurel Brown Signature Residences that offer unparalleled style and quality for experienced renters. 

Commercial and Retail Properties: The managing arm of the Company, SBA Management Services, oversees 15 retail and commercial units within 6 locations. Our tenants include a diverse mix of national and local retailers.

Residence Hall-Style Housing: For 20 years, Steve Brown Apartments owned and managed Madison’s five private residence halls under the brand Private Residence Halls (PRH). As our students’ needs changed, so did our product: today we run many of the same programs we offered at PRH at Lucky on our Dorms Floors.

Margaret Watson Photo

Margaret Watson – Chief Executive Officer

Since starting with Steve Brown Apartments in 1989, Margaret Watson has developed and operated multiple student housing projects, private residence halls, multi-family, and commercial projects for Steve Brown Apartments.

In 1998, Margaret co-developed the “Private Residence Halls” concept for Steve Brown Apartments. The Private Residence Halls—which were operated by Margaret until their sale in 2002—had 2,200 beds, employed a staff of 225, and exceeded expected revenues each year.

She is an Illinois native, holds a bachelor’s degree from the University of Wisconsin-Madison, and a master’s degree in Business Administration from Edgewood College in Madison, Wisconsin. Margaret is also an active board member with Downtown Madison, Inc. and the University Square Condo Association Board and is a former board member and president of the Apartment Association of South Central Wisconsin.

Scott Watson – Chief Financial Officer

Scott Watson has personally overseen the development of more than 1,200 beds of student housing and several hundred multifamily units, as well as $400 million in real estate transactions and structured finance.

He joined Steve Brown Apartments in 1988 and has decades of experience in student housing operations, multifamily management, and commercial real estate finance and development.

Scott, a Minnesota native, has an undergraduate degree from the University of Wisconsin-Madison, and a business degree from Edgewood College in Madison, Wisconsin. He holds a Wisconsin Certified Public Accountant license and sits on the board of Downtown Madison, Inc. and American Players Theater.

Alyssa Hellenbrand-Best – Vice President of Operations

 

Dan Seeley

Dan Seeley – Director of Development

Dan Seeley has been a core member of the Steve Brown Apartments team since 2003.

As the Director of Development he is responsible for coordinating multi-disciplined teams and shepherding development projects from site selection to asset delivery. In his role, he is experienced in building consensus amongst diverse stakeholders including future users, neighbors and municipal leaders.

He has a bachelor’s degree from Luther College in Decorah, Iowa and a master’s degree in Business Administration from the University of Wisconsin-Whitewater. He is an active member of Downtown Madison, Inc, and the Apartment Association of South Central Wisconsin.

Jenny Oppriecht

Jennifer Oppriecht – Marketing Director

Jennifer Oppriecht oversees the regional marketing, branding, social media, and sales strategy needs of Steve Brown Apartments.

She started with the Company in 2006. Since then, she has overseen dozens of successful property lease-ups, led the Company through significant brand updates, and consistently develops traditional and social media campaign strategies that deliver.

Jennifer’s expertise has been instrumental in maintaining higher than average occupancy and retention rates for the Company. Ms. Oppriecht, a Wisconsin native, holds an associate degree in Commercial Art from Madison College.

Cyndi Whedon

Cyndi Whedon – Financial Controller

Cyndi Whedon began working with Steve Brown Apartments in the late 1990s when we first managed and then acquired the Statesider Private Residence Hall, where she was serving as the Director of Dining Services. She transitioned to leading the Company’s accounting department in 2001.

Under Cyndi’s leadership, in 2016, Steve Brown Apartments made a seamless transition to a new customer-focused management software, which has been invaluable to our accounting department by improving rental collections and overall operations.

Cyndi is a native of Iowa and holds a bachelor’s degree in Hotel, Restaurant, and Institutional Management from Iowa State and an associate degree in Accounting from Madison College.

Meggan Allen – Human Resources Director
